What is the "I"? We have described the desires of Eid, the satisfaction of which gives the individual pleasure. We described how the superego guides the actions of the ego and punishes the individual for his sins. We examined how the Ego, sandwiched between these two forces, should guide “us” among the dangers of the outside world. For whom are all these forces working? What is my true self? Maybe this is my ego? Or my Eid? Or my superego?
One woman described her self as something governing her entire remaining being. She represented herself as a charioteer driving a cart drawn by a donkey. The donkey was part of herself; at times he took over and forced her to do the things she regretted. In such cases, I condemned her donkey. What was this I she was talking about? It was an ego.
The ego is a system capable of seeing itself, just as parts of the body can sense one another. From here people get the feeling that they can follow the work of their own psyche as if from the side, just like they can follow the movements of their leg. In fact, the Ego contains three parts, and they can all look at each other at different points in time. One of these parts is made up of special parental images; the other part is the adult self, working in accordance with the Principle of Reality; and in addition, each person sits in the head of a small child that he was once. Every woman has a little girl in her head, and every man has a little boy. The parental part, the adult part and the children's part are three different selves. As long as one of these selves acts independently of the others, the individual feels himself as one person; but if two of them act simultaneously, then each of them looks at the other, wondering what is happening? These three aspects of the ego will be discussed in more detail in chapter IX.
However, there is something beyond this - a certain force that encourages people to grow, develop and become better. It can be seen as the fourth power of personality along with the ego, superego and id. Psychiatrists and psychologists know very little about this fourth force, or maybe they don’t know anything. Believers can say that this is the soul. Scientists currently have no answer. Until now, we have avoided this issue by describing a person simply as an energy system - a system of forces that is constantly trying to restore or maintain balance, and does not at all try to “please” someone or something outside of itself or in itself, no more than The Earth is trying to “please” someone, revolving around the Sun. It is useful to assume, however, that there is a certain system of stresses, under normal conditions, continuously pushing living beings in the direction of progress. We can assume the existence of such a system to explain why a person grows, why the human race tries to become better, why animals become more entrepreneurial in the process of evolution, and why the psyche is enriched with a creative love for beauty, as its energy system becomes more complex - from jellyfish through frogs and monkeys - to man.
We can forget about who needs all this, and yet assume that within us there is a kind of force, pushing us further and higher.
As we will see later, neurosis gives the individual a number of advantages.
What kind of power makes him want to recover if he is in many ways better to stay with his neurosis? What is the healing power of nature that causes the sick body and the sick psyche to strive for health, for continued growth? What makes an embryo develop? Why doesn't he just remain an embryo? Growing up is hard work that requires a lot of energy. What made some jellyfish develop into a person? Why didn’t they remain forever jellyfish? After all, evolution is also hard work.
In search of an answer, we turn to Zeno, the great Semitic who lived more than two thousand years ago. For many years Zeno wandered and asked questions. His wanderings ended in Athens, in Ancient Greece, but he continued to ask questions. Zeno often spoke of physicism, the power of nature, which always encourages all things to grow, and those who grow - to improve. He was not the first to come up with the idea of ​​a physicist, but he thought a lot about it in connection with the growth and development of living things. Since then, many philosophers have spoken about the creative power of nature, which encourages all things to grow, following a certain correct and progressive path.
If such a desire for growth exists in the human psyche and body, then how can it be included in our energy system, and how is it connected with other stresses of our psyche? Recall that the above talk was about a mortido directed inward and outward, and about a libido directed outward; but until now, little mention has been made of libido directed inward. It may turn out that the growth energy comes from the libido directed inward. This explanation seems, however, too simple; the exact opposite is not excluded: libido may turn out to be just one aspect of growth energy. Perhaps the physicist does not exist at all; but with all our inability to say something definite about this subject, very many things are happening in such a way as if such a force existed; and therefore it is easier to understand a person by assuming that it really exists.
Starting from this place, we allow ourselves to assume that physicism is a force that must be taken into account when studying the human psyche, while avoiding the question of whether this force is related to the inward libido and what this connection can consist of. We have not completely solved the problem of who this "charioteer" is, for whose sake the Ego, Superego and Eid maintain a delicate balance of stresses that allows a person to grow and develop; but we realized that in the human psyche there are other possibilities that should not be neglected.
