Why sex is better than hugs

In terms of more traditional science, oxytocin is a hormone that causes
smooth muscle contractions in the female genital tract3. Its name comes from the Greek words oξύϛ (fast) and τόkoϛ (birth), because the main function of oxytocin is to stimulate the contractions of the uterus during labor. Oxytocin is sold in pharmacies, because it is widely used both in human and in veterinary medicine to stimulate labor and to stop uterine bleeding after them. During breastfeeding, oxytocin contributes to the work of the smooth muscles of the mammary glands and, consequently, the release of milk.
It is this function of oxytocin that is traditionally considered the most important, and the effect on behavior is an amusing side effect. But in fact they go side by side from the dark depths of the centuries: even the primitive roundworm C. elegans synthesizes a substance in the nervous system that is very similar to oxytocin, and it is involved in the learning processes and in the regulation of sexual behavior.
In mammals, oxytocin acts on memory in two ways. It is important for maintaining contact with the congeners (and in fact for this it is necessary to memorize their faces or smells), but it can disturb the formation of a long-term memory of external unpleasant events. If the rats are placed on a safe platform, from which you should not leave, because the floor in the rest of the cage is under tension, then the animals quickly remember that they do not need to walk around the cage, and sit on a safe patch. But if, in parallel with training, to administer oxytocin to animals, they, falling again and again into the same cell, fearlessly go to explore the area and burn the legs.
It can be assumed that the huge release of oxytocin during childbirth helps to forget that it was very painful and scary. Indeed, there is evidence that when women are asked to describe the generic pain experienced by them, the assessment of its intensity decreases with time. It is unlikely that this mechanism arose in order for a woman to decide to have a second child - most of human history this process was not so deliberate (although it can be assumed that, other things being equal and on a scale of large numbers, more children are born by women who are not afraid of childbirth ). But it is likely that the ability to forget generic pain helps to better relate to an already born baby.
Oxytocin is directly associated with the manifestation of affection for children. In 2010, Israeli researchers confirmed this by examining 160 married couples who gave birth to their first child. They came to visit their families a month and six months after giving birth, measured the level of oxytocin in both parents and recorded on video, like moms and dads play with their babies. It turned out that both moms and popes, the level of oxytocin during the first months of a child's life increases, and there is a clear correlation between its concentration in the blood and parental behavior. Moms with high levels of oxytocin in the blood kiss many of their children, stroke them and say tender words to them. Oxytocin acts on fathers a little differently - stimulates to engage with the child and provoke him to perform some actions (for example, monitor the toy).
Perhaps the opposite is true: it is not oxytocin that stimulates us to work with children, and fussing with children increases the level of oxytocin.
We all have seen the magic mantra “correlation says nothing about a causal relationship” a hundred times in scientific and near-scientific publications - this is exactly the case. In all likelihood, the positive effects here are locked into a loop. On the one hand, physical contact with a child (both with one’s own and with a stranger) causes an increase in the concentration of oxytocin, on the other hand, administration of oxytocin (and in double-blind tests, when even the experimenters themselves do not know whether they give oxytocin or placebo) improves attitude towards children9 - both facts are established experimentally.
“Love Hormone” is important not only for relationships with cubs, but also for relationships with a partner. In evolution, in general, it often happens that a bunch of extra things are wound over the main function. This is the story that happened with feathers. Dinosaurs grew them for thermal insulation, then they began to use them to attract partners, and no one else knew that it was the feathers that would allow one of the dinosaur groups to learn how to fly, survive and take over the world - these creatures are known as “birds”. In the formation of attachments, the evolutionary principle also works “why invent from scratch when you can file what is”: new brain functions (for example, the ability to have monogamous relationships) can easily develop on the basis of old neural structures (for example, involved in parental behavior) .
The link between oxytocin and attachment to a partner is best studied in females of the steppe vole, one of the few monogamous species of rodents. Normally, a vole-virgin, having spent the night with a partner, becomes attached to him, tends to spend as much time with him as possible and reacts aggressively to other males. Attachment formation is due to the release of dopamine and oxytocin in the nucleus accumbens (the “pleasure center”). If, before the date, to block the receptors for one of these neurotransmitters, the first man will not make any impression on the vole, and she will continue to search for a partner as if nothing had happened. But if, on the contrary, we introduce oxytocin (or substances activating receptors to dopamine) to the vole, then she will love the first oncoming male even without any sex.
We, fortunately, do not inject anything into the brain, and therefore, for attachment to a partner, oxytocin has to be extracted naturally. The most effective way to increase its concentration is vaginal sex. The fact is that all mammals have a Ferguson reflex: an increase in the concentration of oxytocin in response to mechanical stimulation of the vagina and cervix. On the veterinary sites you can find this advice: if a pig gave birth to piglets, but can not start feeding them, then you need to take a bicycle pump, pump air into her vagina and hold labia to prevent air from escaping. The pressure created will lead to an increase in milk flow, which requires oxytocin. Similar advice can be given to men who want to strengthen the attachment of the beloved: she needs to provide mechanical stimulation of the vagina. Usually they do this for a long time having sex, but in principle you can try it with a bicycle pump. Perhaps after this woman really never forgets you.

Why sex is better than hugs

  1. WHY A BREAST IS BETTER
In the early days of mastering breastfeeding, you may want to drop it all and grab onto the bottle. You can be encouraged to do so by the advice of people who believe that artificial nutrition is simpler and even as high-quality. Or you may be worried that you are “the wrong plan” mom who can successfully breastfeed. However, when you understand the benefits of breastfeeding
  2. Sex after giving birth
Yes, there is sex after delivery and during breastfeeding, but this may not be what you are used to. Abandoned fathers often shared with me: “All she does is feed”, “We do not make love for weeks”, “Okay, with hormones, I also have needs!” And your feelings and your wife’s strong affection for the child are the norm. That your wife turned your attention away from you
  3. Sex, business and morality
The flow of information about schools of intimacy, or rather about sex, has swept us. Trays with brochures, newspapers, radio, and television every day intrigue us with a variety of approaches to this issue. “The forbidden fruit is always sweet” - that's what got everything with the costs and base statement of the problem. The propaganda of sex, violence, perversity of the highest human feelings is now expressed very
  4. LOVE, SEX and SUPPORT
So, the formation of the market, the market value system significantly affected the post-Soviet family. Following the European countries in Russia, especially in big cities, for young generations, the values of individualism, personal realization become more and more important, which leads to the recognition of the partner's autonomy. Values of status, career, social status began to compete with value
  5. Where and who lives better
Where better to live in order to maintain health? In a large industrial city, like Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Yaroslavl, or in remote Krasnoyarsk, or just on the periphery - the High North in the city of Nadym, which means: happy, kind, affectionate? Or choose a quiet life in the countryside? This question is not difficult, and we, the residents of a large industrial city with a developed
  6. And our swamp is better!
Every sandpiper praises its swamp, but the fact is a stubborn thing. You probably know about the system about the existence of various methods, read a lot of books on the restoration of health and, in particular, vision. Each of them is good in its own way and, of course, has the right to exist. But the main secret of success is still not in methods and books, but in whether you work on yourself or not. If you do not attach any
  7. How best to use this book
    1. Find your illness and read the explanation of its meaning (Best of all use the search (Edit-> Search) - Note of the e-book designer) 2. Remember or write down what concerns you or seemed to be the most important thing you read. 3. Carefully read the additional questions at the end of the book and answer them - this will allow you to more accurately determine the cause of the disease. 4. Slowly, carefully
  8. It is better to overeat than not to sleep, or a false opposition
One of the most common methods is the so-called false opposition. Do not be afraid of the science of this term - everything is much simpler than it seems. The statement is constructed in such a way that the final part of its form seems to contradict the beginning, but actually strengthens it, develops it. Let's, until you decide to throw the book into a corner with a sweep, we will give an example.
  9. Sleep and overweight. The more you sleep, the better you lose weight!
Usually, the main defendant in the obesity process is nutrition. Indeed, the food is fat, abundant, idle, of course, leads to extra pounds. But, as we have recently become clearer and clearer, the point here is not only in food. Or rather, the fatty food has accomplices. And one of these accomplices is a bad, short, inadequate sleep, lack of sleep. And it is revealed
  10. What is the best food to cook for babies?
The choice of foods used for feeding, among different categories of the population varies considerably due to different traditions and different degrees of availability. The following section discusses the use of various foods for feeding. The new WHO report (19) proposes a convenient way of calculating the contribution of various products to filling the energy and nutrient deficiencies that
  11. What antihypertensive drugs best reduce blood pressure in the perioperative period in these patients?
The most effective drugs for the treatment of renovascular hypertension are those that reduce the activity of the renin-angiotensin system, namely, ACE inhibitors, | 3-adrenoceptors and centrally acting drugs that reduce sympathetic activity. There are several ACE inhibitors, but only enalaprilat can be administered IV (ch. 20). Side effects of ACE inhibitors include
  12. Part 6: Why
Our brain is not satisfied with the knowledge of what exactly is in front of us, in what quantity, where exactly, when this or that event occurs and how objects interact with each other. Cause and effect - things are certainly important, but in reality our brain wants to know the answer to the question "why." Why does one happen and not another? Why does something happen time after time, and something -
  13. Picture 6: Why, Scientific Schedule
So, we have come to the last and rather large question. “Why” is the universal key to solve problems. If we can answer the question “why” (why something works in a certain way, why one event happens and not another, why some things seem inevitable), then we can consider a significant part of our problem solved. Perhaps the details of the solution are not clear yet, however
  14. Why persist?
Children with special needs, and who are breastfed, place additional demands on the mother. Family, friends, or even doctors may wonder why a mother persists in expressing milk regularly, working with the baby on the breast, which takes a lot of time and seems to cause even more stress. They can convince her to stop breastfeeding. Artificial feeding
  15. Your pictures "why." Theme and Variations
    I. Simple Truth Draw a simple “pretty good” portrait showing why visual thinking is a powerful way to solve problems. My solution is given in the appendix on p. 374. 2. Scientific scheme Create a simple multi-factor scheme that can illustrate one or two connections between the following data sets: the proportion of participants in a typical business meeting,
  16. Why do mothers need help
You can often hear the words: "Breastfeeding is natural - why should women help in this?" Of course, some mothers are lucky. They feed their babies without any difficulty. But many women need help from the outset — especially with first-born children, and also if they are very young. Many women need help to continue breastfeeding, especially if they work outside the home,
  17. Why donkey called a donkey?
Stone, picked out of reusable public chewing gum! And really, why donkey called a donkey? Yes, it is for stupidity and stubbornness. If you tie it with a small rope to a small bush, after some time, when thirst and hunger declare themselves, they begin to reach towards the source: “I want to eat, I want to drink. »Deep pits form under the hooves. And so it will be
  18. WHY NOT TO REMEMBER ABOUT MUHOMORAH
Catching up with the use of hemlock venom to cure cancer, V.V. Tishchenko did not forget about other poisons: ASD fractions, solanine, copper sulphate, mercuric chloride, poison of amanita mushrooms. The red fly agaric, for example, is widely known for its virulence. This attracted the attention of V. V. Tishchenko: “If we talk about poisons, then why not think about the fly-agaric? Use white and red amanita. Three-liter bottle tight
  19. Why?
I am breathing. I go. I say. I think. I don’t think about these things; Why should I think about thinking? The process of thinking occurs naturally, you learn it in the process of development. Smart people do not need to learn thinking in order to think. Others will not be able to think, no matter how hard they try. What is wrong with this view? SO AS ... Since thinking is fundamental
  20. Why do children wake up
To understand why babies often wake up at night, it is necessary to know the basic principles of infant sleep. There are two main stages of sleep: light and deep. For smaller babies, the duration of light sleep is higher in percentage terms. During the night, children go from a light sleep to a deep one and back to a light sleep, in the process of transition from one sleep stage to another there is a vulnerable period during which they
