Secondly, the situation can be changed: to run away, to fight and generally to fuss in every possible way. The bad news is that “choice” is loudly said: the form of behavior in new and potentially dangerous situations is largely innate and depends on the activity of the sympathetic nervous system. If you take a rat, expose it to some stress factor and measure the adrenaline rush and heart rate, it will allow you to predict with a high degree of accuracy how it will behave in all other similar situations 11. If the activity of the sympathetic nervous system is high, then the rat will clash with competitors, bravely explore the new space and actively try to swim when placed in water. If the sympathetic nervous system works less intensively, the animal is more likely to give up in a social collision, it will freeze in the corner for a long time and even swim worse. In this case, one should not assume that an active response to a stress effect is something better (or, on the contrary, worse) than a passive one. A cautious rat will eat worse because it rarely finds rare delicacies and also does not want to fight for its sake with its comrades, but then it gets less dangerous in situations like collision with a predator, so there are no chances to survive and leave offspring no less than a rat with an active lifestyle.
For people, a similar classification was developed in the middle of the last century by American cardiologists Meyer Friedman and Roy Rosenman. They introduced the concept of behavioral types A and B and developed questionnaires to separate one from another. People belonging to behavioral type A (in its extreme manifestations) are energetic, aggressive, ambitious, prone to competition with others, in their professional activities they are constantly concerned about the lack of time and strive for high productivity, they abruptly move and speak abruptly. Their opposite, people of type B, are relaxed and calm, patient, spend more time with their hobbies, are non-irritating, work steadily, are less concerned with competition with others, move smoothly and speak. From the point of view of cardiology, the meaning of this separation was that belonging to type A was, as it was then believed, associated with high blood pressure and significantly increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease, so these people should be advised to take better care of their health.
In modern cardiology, this theory was abandoned, because in the study of large groups of subjects it was not possible to identify a significant statistical relationship between the predisposition to cardiovascular diseases and personality traits associated with behavioral type A. But the terminology has taken root in studies of stress, at least in Russia . In early 2013, the newspaper “Trinity Option”, with which scientists and scientific journalists collaborate, published my interview with Dmitry Zhukov, half devoted to his research on rats exhibiting type A or type B behavior under stress. He shared fresh news: it turns out behavioral type depends on how effective antidepressants will be. Traditional and fussy rats, depressed, traditional drugs help well, but calm and passive animals respond poorly to this therapy, but they can be cured with oxytocin. It is likely that in the future, these data will help to more effectively treat depression in people.
Today, there is no complete description of all genetic and hormonal factors that influence individual behavior patterns under stress. The only thing that remains for an individual is a constant observation of oneself, an analysis of one’s own behavior and well-being in stressful situations, which will allow one to approximately understand what to expect from oneself in the future. And of course, you need a certain amount of humility and acceptance, the memory of the fact that stress is a very physiological thing, and if it is accompanied by perspiration and fussy senseless activity, then most likely it will always be so. Another question is that each specific situation can be made less stressful - for this it is simply necessary that the brain does not consider it to be completely unexpected and new. Suppose if you have to speak to the board of directors in your office meeting room tomorrow and you are nervous, it will be very useful to scroll your presentation in the same room the day before - then the brain will think: “I saw everything yesterday, well, except that people are new , - perhaps it makes no sense to deploy a strong stress reaction. ” It is much more effective than trying to suppress stress with willpower.
