Individual style of psychologist

When considering the basic requirements (and contraindications) to a professional psychologist, one should also recall the inevitable formation of an individual work style by experienced specialists. An individual style of activity is an appropriate system of interrelated actions, with the help of which a certain result is achieved ”(V.S. Merlin).

Individual styles of professional activity (according to A.K. Markova):

1. The style formed taking into account the requirements for activity - the employee adapts to the profession, he is usually productive.

2. A style formed on the basis of the convenience of a person - the activity adapts to the requirements of a specialist, therefore, it may not be effective.

3. A compromise style is chosen in accordance with the inclination of the specialist, while there is no conflict with the requirements of the activity. The effectiveness of professional activity is high, there is no psychological overstrain of the specialist himself.

4. The universal style includes methods and tactics that do not meet the psychophysiological abilities of a person, therefore, it requires mental expenses from him, but at the same time causes his satisfaction.

5. Compensatory style means the presence of the ability to replace, complete the missing qualities, taking into account the requirements of the activity.

6. The masking style allows you to hide the shortcomings of a specialist without possible compensation.

7. The predetermining style is the specialist’s going beyond his known capabilities, with the definition of new resources.

8. The corrective style is guaranteed by the fact that the specialist realigns his natural features taking into account the life-long ways of working and behavior.

9. Creative style - in this style, the specialist goes beyond the requirements of the profession, enriching it, ahead of its colleagues.

10. Excessive style - the employee voluntarily spends more of his strength and capabilities than is required by professional activities and society.

Stages of the formation of an individual style of activity:

1. - mastering professional activities according to already established schemes and procedures (it is important to learn how to work “as expected”)

1.1. - a general orientation in this activity, when a novice employee already knows or imagines how to work, but cannot perform the work itself as a whole;

1.2. - the development of individual actions and operations, as well as the development of individual procedures, techniques and methods of work;

1.3. development of activities in general, according to a normatively approved model.

2. - deviation from normatively approved work patterns

2.1. - the emergence of a general idea of work in a new, different way (an approximate idea of how to successfully carry out a professional task differently than is usually done);

2.2. - trial and development of individual actions in a new way;

2.3. - gradual design and development of all activities in a new way, i.e. the formation of their individual style of professional activity.
