Scientific activities of professional psychologists
Scientific psychology is one of the most important areas of activity of professional psychologists.
Psychologists working in the field of scientific psychology conduct scientific research on mental phenomena, patterns of mental processes, conditions, properties. A feature of scientific research of the psyche is the objectivity and greater reliability of psychological knowledge. Research is aimed at finding new psychological knowledge (explanation, proof and prediction of psychological phenomena). Using a variety of methods - systematic observations, experiments, conversations, testing - psychologists obtain objective knowledge about the mental world. To study and characterize the human psychic world, scientists use abstract scientific categories, such as, for example, activity, individual, personality, individuality, subject of activity, communication, ability, sensory and perception, level of claims, affect, frustration, etc. To describe the relationships and mechanisms of mental activity, they develop scientific theories and concepts that help explain and predict certain psychological phenomena. Scientific and psychological research is characterized by their generalization, systematicity, evidence, reliance on scientific facts and concepts. Scientific and psychological knowledge and research results are usually presented in the language of scientific psychology, understandable to professional psychologists, and are not always available for understanding by an unprepared reader.
Scientific psychology is often called academic. At the same time, there is a special area of scientific psychology - applied psychology, which is studying the ways of practical application (application) of scientific and psychological knowledge to solve practical problems.
Psychologists working in the field of scientific psychology conduct psychological research. The main tasks of their research activities:
- explanation of psychological phenomena,
- proof of certain theoretical propositions (hypotheses),
- prediction of certain psychological facts.
They should be able to work with scientific literature, identify on this basis existing approaches to the study of certain psychological problems, systematize the scientific facts obtained by other scientists and described in books and articles. For a scientist working in the field of science, it is important to know the language and style of written and oral scientific speech.
He must present the results of his research in publications and speeches at scientific conferences and symposia. Psychologists and scientists should be able to develop, organize and conduct psychological research aimed at collecting empirical data. The term "empiria" (empiricism) comes from the Greek word "empeiria" (experience). Currently, in many sciences, empiry (empiricism) is understood to mean any combination of scientific facts and data. An empirical study is a study whose purpose is to obtain data in various ways: methods of observation and self-observation, laboratory and natural experiment, modeling (Kulikov, 1994, p.5).
Sometimes psychologists confuse such concepts as empirical and experimental. The term "experiment" comes from the Latin word "experimentum" (test, experience) and means scientifically established experience, observation of the studied phenomenon under precisely accounted conditions, which allow monitoring the course of the phenomenon and repeatedly reproducing it when these conditions are repeated (ibid.). The experimental data obtained by psychologists in research are at the same time empirical. However, in addition to experimental, empirical data also include data obtained using other methods of psychological research (as a result of observation, conversation, questioning, testing).
A necessary professional skill of psychologists and scientists can be considered mastery of the methods of mathematical statistics that are necessary for the qualified processing of empirical data obtained in the study, for reliable proof of scientific hypotheses. In addition, it is important to learn the correct analysis, systematization and interpretation (explanation) of the received and processed data.
Thus, psychologists working in science, reveal scientific facts that deepen our knowledge about the mental world of people (or animals), study the laws of mental life, develop theories that explain psychological facts and laws, create methods of psychological research. Research psychologists work in research institutes and centers, in the psychological laboratories of universities and institutes, in the departments of applied psychology of industrial research institutes and universities. Scientific research also serves as an important type of professional activity for university professors and academic institutes.
