General requirements for psychological counseling and counseling psychologist

The system of general, professional, and moral and ethical requirements for psychological counseling and for the practical work of a counseling psychologist is best reflected in existing codes of professional ethics for practical psychologists. Many of the provisions of these codes are directly applicable to the work of a counseling psychologist. Recall these provisions by including in their wording the phrase “psychologist-consultant” instead of the word “psychologist”.

1. The professional activity of a psychologist-consultant is characterized by his special responsibility to the client for the recommendations that he offers to the client.

2. The practical work of a counseling psychologist should be based on appropriate moral, ethical and legal foundations.

3. The work of a psychologist-consultant is aimed at achieving exclusively humane goals, involving the removal of any restrictions on the path of intellectual and personal (personal) development of the client.

4. The psychologist-consultant builds his work on the basis of unconditional respect for the dignity and integrity of the client’s personality. The counseling psychologist respects the fundamental human rights defined by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

5. In working with clients, a counseling psychologist is guided by the principles of honesty and openness (sincerity). However, he should be careful in advising and advising the client.

6. The consultant psychologist is obliged to inform colleagues and members of their professional associations about violations of client rights that he has noticed and about cases of inhumane treatment of clients.

7. The consulting psychologist has the right to provide only such services to clients for which he has the necessary education, qualifications, knowledge and skills.

8. In his work, a psychologist-consultant should apply only proven methods that meet modern general scientific standards.

An obligatory component of the work of a psychologist-consultant is the constant maintenance at a high level of their professional knowledge and skills.

10. In the case of the forced use of psychological techniques and recommendations that have not been adequately tested and do not fully meet scientific requirements, the counseling psychologist should warn his clients about this and be very careful in his conclusions.

11. The consultant psychologist does not have the right to disclose or transfer to third parties data about his clients or about the results of the consultation.

12. The consultant psychologist is obliged to prevent the use of psychological counseling methods and psychological impact on people by incompetent people who are not professionally trained by people, and also to warn those who use the services of such “specialists” about this.

13. A consultant psychologist is not entitled to transfer methods of psychological work with clients to incompetent persons.

14. The consultant psychologist should be careful not to cause unreasonable hopes and expectations on the part of the client, not to give him promises, advice and recommendations that cannot be fulfilled.

15. The counseling psychologist is personally responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of customer information.

Compliance with all these rules or ethical standards is mandatory in the practical work of a counseling psychologist.

In addition, there are a number of significant differences between a good, professionally trained psychologist-consultant and a bad, professionally not fully trained one. These differences relate to the way the counseling psychologist behaves towards the client in different situations of psychological counseling, how he gets out of difficult situations that often arise in the process of conducting psychological counseling.
