Training in psychological knowledge as a type of activity of psychologists
Another common activity of psychologists is to teach people psychological knowledge. Since the beginning of the 20th century, university and institute departments have been centers of psychological thought and scientific psychology. Professors led psychological research, and the teaching activity was aimed at presenting their concepts and psychological views. The purpose of teaching was to disseminate psychological ideas, to prepare future scientists. The pedagogical abilities of the professor were highly valued, but the main thing for him was still his scientific qualification.
As practical psychology developed, forms and methods of teaching practical psychological knowledge and skills were developed. This knowledge and skills were studied both by students who want to become practical psychologists, and by people who want to increase their practical psychological competence.
At the same time, the profession of a teacher of psychology has its own specifics, unlike the profession of psychologist-scientist and psychologist-practitioner. He should not only have psychological knowledge, but also be able to pass it on to students. In this regard, the skills, personal qualities and abilities of a psychology teacher are akin to other teaching professions. To be successful, it must meet the following criteria:
1) have a wide education, awareness in various fields of psychological knowledge, as well as be erudite in other sciences;
2) fundamentally know the subject taught;
3) be able to independently select educational material, determine the best tools and effective teaching methods;
4) own the logic and lexical richness of speech, expressive means of communication, oratory and artistic abilities;
5) be able to explain educational material in an accessible way in order to ensure its understanding and assimilation by students;
6) possess observation, exactingness and the ability to understand the student;
7) be able to create motivation for students to learn educational material;
8) possess communicative and organizational skills;
9) own pedagogical tact.
Of course, as in other types of professional psychological work, it is important for a psychologist to take into account the individual characteristics of his personality in teaching.
Currently, in Russia there are great opportunities for psychologists to work in the field of teaching psychological knowledge. Psychology is taught in both higher and secondary educational institutions. Psychology is taught at the psychological faculties of universities and other higher education institutions that train professional psychologists, in pedagogical, medical, legal, technical and many other universities. Psychology is often studied by students in secondary schools and special educational institutions: in schools, gymnasiums, lyceums, and vocational schools.
The amount of training time devoted to the study of psychology, programs, forms and methods of teaching psychology in different types of educational institutions differ depending on the goals and objectives of teaching.
Teaching psychology to students studying in specialties whose work is directly related to people. Such professions include, for example, the professions of a teacher, doctor, lawyer, manager, commander of a military unit, social worker.
Training in these curricula is carried out at the relevant departments of universities, as well as in higher pedagogical, medical, legal, technical educational institutions, and in secondary specialized educational and medical institutions. In this case, the teaching of psychology is aimed at teaching the psychological knowledge and skills necessary for these specialists to successfully complete professional activities. The amount of study time and the number of academic disciplines in psychology studied by students in these programs are determined by the need to form their professional psychological competence.
Training in psychological knowledge and skills is carried out in the form of lectures, seminars and workshops, in the form of guidance for the independent work of students (preparation of special messages, essays and term papers). In secondary specialized educational institutions, such as vocational schools, technical schools, colleges, training is usually carried out in the form of lessons, although the types of lessons can be different depending on the learning tasks that they implement. In addition, psychology is taught as a general educational subject in many higher and secondary specialized educational institutions, where psychological knowledge is not professionally necessary, but performs a general educational function. Such specialties include, for example, the profession of physicist, chemist, engineer, technologist.
Training in psychological knowledge and skills outside the framework of training programs. There is a wide range of psychological courses of a practical nature, which are conducted outside the curricula of higher or secondary educational institutions. These are, for example, continuing education courses for practical psychologists in some areas of practical psychological work (for example, family counseling, organizational counseling, game therapy, fairy tales, etc.). The purpose of training is quite specific - theoretical and practical development of a method or direction of practical psychology. The training is usually carried out by practical psychologists with extensive experience in this field.
Psychological education of different categories of people, which is carried out by psychologists - scientists and practitioners - is also a form of training in psychological knowledge. It is held in institutions and organizations of various types in the form of separate lectures, seminars or a course of studies, has a focused nature depending on the needs of users of psychological knowledge. The content of such training sessions is aimed at the possibility of direct use to solve certain problems that people face in their professional activity or life. Classes are, as a rule, a pronounced practically oriented character. In many cases, psychological training of various subjects becomes the preferred form of practical training.
Thus, the circle of educational institutions, institutions, organizations, forms and methods of teaching psychology of different categories of people is quite large. This provides great opportunities for psychologists to work as teachers and trainers who teach psychological knowledge and skills.
