Basic professionally important personality traits of a psychologist

Sometimes you can hear how people say "Yes, you are a born psychologist." In fact, what kind of skills and personality traits must you have when entering this specialty, and what else can you learn?

A recent survey of practicing psychologists on the site www.futurejob.ru showed that there are not so many necessary qualities, all the rest are professional skills that can be more or less mastered in the process of study or practice.

So, psychologists have come to the conclusion that the most important feature of a successful future psychologist, regardless of the chosen specialization, is interest and respect for the person. Yes, it is to the Person with a capital letter. This refers to a sincere interest in how the inner world of a person works, a sincere desire to understand the intricacies of the human psyche. A kind of healthy curiosity: how does it work, man. A man other than yourself. Such interest is not amenable to development; it either exists or does not exist. In other words, we can talk about philanthropy, friendliness, humanism ...

Another important quality is tolerance. This is tolerance for another, different, willingness to accept different manifestations of people without aggression and irritation. This quality is, perhaps, more amenable to development, but still, if it already exists as a given, it will be easier. After all, the psychologist works with a variety of people, and for effective work, the invaluable acceptance of a person is very important.

The third was named such quality as flexibility and openness to change. If you easily adapt to new conditions, if you can recognize your mistakes and quickly change your behavior depending on the situation, then you have one of the qualities that are professionally important for a psychologist.

The future psychologist also needs sensitivity, in other words, sensitivity. If you feel the mood of another person well, you can guess his needs, feel the pain and joy of loved ones as your own, then you have one more important quality.
I must say that it, in general, is developing, but the initial level also matters.

Among other qualities, such as the ability to clearly express one’s thoughts and the ability to hear and understand another were also named, because the psychologist communicates a lot with people. It was also called the ability to manage their own emotions. Indeed, it is difficult to imagine an unrestrained, explosive, extremely impulsive psychologist. All these skills, in principle, are amenable to development, there would be a desire.

I must say that the main difficulty of a psychologist in any field is the risk of emotional burnout. After all, in one way or another, the psychologist joins each person’s fate and life, passes his situations and problems through himself. This risk should not be underestimated. If you notice that you quickly get tired of intensive communication, then imagine that it will occupy the bulk of your life as a professional duty.

Thus, the main professionally important qualities are the following: developed communication skills (the ability to hear and understand another, the ability to relate and ask a question, state and argue one’s point of view), the ability to manage one’s emotions, the ability to empathy (empathy), the ability to keep a secret, high level of development of verbal-logical, figurative and abstract-symbolic thinking, good logical and emotional memory, developed stability, switchability and amount of attention, high intelligence Ordering performance. Flexibility, objectivity, goodwill, self-confidence, responsibility, observation, patience, tact. Wide horizons and erudition. The tendency to work with people and research activities.
