The study of the psychological characteristics of the military team

If the commander knows the features of the headed team, then he will easily be able to find the most effective management methods, he will be able to successfully implement the decisions made in any environment.

To study the psychological characteristics of a military team, the unit commander, as a rule, uses methods of observation, interrogation, and analysis of the results of group activities.

The observation method allows the commander to obtain the most objective information. At the same time, he systematically studies the group activities of military personnel in order to identify and analyze facts characterizing a military team (forms, content of interpersonal relationships; distribution of “roles” among military personnel; formation of collective norms of behavior, relations, opinions and moods; channels for disseminating official and unofficial information; the presence of traditions, rituals).

The survey allows you to obtain information about the military team from the military by asking them questions through direct interaction with him (an interview) or indirect socio-psychological interaction (questionnaire).

The analysis of the results of group activities (the results of the implementation of combat training and other tasks, the state of military discipline) enables the commander to characterize the military team, as well as the changes that take place in it according to specific results at different periods of life.

When studying the psychological characteristics of a military team, the commander, as a rule, focuses on:

? on the ratio of the official and unofficial structures of interpersonal communication of military personnel (in this case, the degree of coincidence of the subordination system and unofficially established relations between military personnel, which are formed both in the performance of official duties and outside time), is assessed;

? the presence and characteristics of microgroups, leaders (identifies and analyzes: the number and number of microgroups, the roles and relationships of military personnel in them, the common interests on which each group was formed and its focus; characteristics of leaders);

? general assessment of collective cohesion (it is being studied: how the value-orientational unity of military personnel reflects aspects of vital activity that are fundamentally important for official activity (for example, the coincidence of their opinions on issues not related to the service is not of fundamental importance, and the unity of views on the organization of the service and maintaining strong military discipline is an essential indicator); how the experiences of one of the members of the collective are given to others as motives of behavior organizing their own act telnost.

When using other methods (testing, sociometry, expert survey), as well as the need for a more in-depth study of the psychological characteristics of the military team, the unit commander needs to turn to the psychologist of the military unit for help.
