The study of the psychological characteristics of the serviceman

The study of subordinates is achieved, as a rule, in two interconnected ways.

The first is a special study, collection and analysis of various data on the life, study, service and behavior of a warrior. The most accessible and common of these are document analysis and conversation.

The second is the observation of subordinates in the course of daily life.

Document Analysis

Working with documents is a process that allows you to develop a preliminary idea of a soldier.

Personal documents (autobiographies, statements, questionnaires, characteristics, professional psychological selection cards), various references, reviews, diaries, letters, photographs, service records and official cards, individual interview sheets, medical books are analyzed.

Their study allows you to:

? firstly, to identify social prerequisites for the predominant formation and consolidation of a soldier of one or another individual psychological qualities that contribute to or inhibit normal adaptation to military service, subsequent professional formation;

? secondly, to highlight in the training and production activities of young men before being drafted into the army, specific manifestations (facts) testifying to the stability of certain interests, value orientations, traits of character, orientation;

? thirdly, to determine the general direction and composition of methodological techniques for further research on the personal characteristics of the military man.

Important information about cognitive abilities, level of psychological stability, military professional orientation and certain professionally important qualities of a soldier can be obtained from a professional psychological selection card for a draftee, which contains the results of a socio-psychological study, psychological and psycho-physiological examination during registration and recruitment ( sections II – IV of the map).

Private conversation

An individual conversation is one of the most important and most effective methods for studying the personal characteristics of military personnel. It should be remembered that the conversation should not be reduced to meaningless conversation. It is a focused form of study of military personnel and requires compliance with certain conditions.

Firstly, before the conversation begins, it is necessary to clearly define the main goal, to think through the sequence of posing the questions asked, to study all available information, including the results of the study of documents.

Secondly, care must be taken to ensure that the interview takes place in a calm and confidential environment, in the absence of unauthorized persons and is not interrupted. All questions should be simple and understandable, they need to be posed so that they contribute to the development of a single holistic story of the serviceman about himself, his life, the difficulties of military service.

Conversation should not result in a simple survey. Pre-identified issues cannot limit the content of the conversation - they are only the main guidelines for its general orientation. However, it is advisable to adhere to a certain plan, especially for a young officer.

With its skillful conduct, the commander can assess not only the needs, motives, inclinations, interests, character traits, cognitive processes, but also reveal deeply personal experiences of the warrior, which to one degree or another impede the performance of military service, his opinion on the situation in the military team, about colleagues, commanders.

All information received about the personality characteristics of the subject, their findings should be recorded only after the conversation.
It should be remembered that as a result of the conversation it is important not only to gather the necessary information about the military man, but also to have a positive psychological and pedagogical effect on him. At the end of the conversation, it is advisable to express wishes, give useful tips that facilitate adaptation to the conditions of military service.

Observation

The observation method is a purposeful and systematic study of actions, deeds, behavior in general, attitudes towards service and various phenomena of the surrounding reality in order to detect, register and analyze those facts that can characterize the orientation, nature, abilities and other personal qualities of military personnel.

When observing, the subject of study is the practical actions (actions) of an individual. In this case, the attitude to military service, the presence of moral, psychological and other qualities of a military man that are important for the successful completion of military service are revealed.

The subject of observation can be interpersonal contacts of team members, units, combat crews: their number, duration, character, activity, adaptation, initiative, dominance, and other indicators of intra-group interaction. In addition, observation helps to study the individual characteristics of the military; personality orientation, organizational, pedagogical, communicative, leadership, emotional, volitional and other qualities.

When determining the attitude to military service, attention should be paid to observing the norms and rules of behavior regulated by the charters of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, to fulfilling the daily routine, functional duties, discipline, diligence, and relations with commanders.

Information on the character traits, the capabilities of a soldier and the degree of his psychological stability are provided by actions in difficult and dangerous situations requiring endurance, self-control and psychological hardening. The speed, accuracy and quality of the implementation of various kinds of standards and tasks in combat and special training make it possible to assess the level of formation of individual psychological qualities.

Particular attention should be paid to cheeky behavior, mild irritability, temper, impatience and fussiness, theatricality, demonstrativeness, shyness, isolation, tearfulness, awkwardness, angularity and sharpness of movements, stiff posture, uncomfortable fit, unmotivated movements of arms and legs, frequent blinking, twitching eyelids and cheeks, biting the lips, redness of the skin of the face and neck, excessive sweating.

These signs indicate a varying degree of severity of the neuropsychic instability of the serviceman, which significantly impedes the normal passage of military service. When identifying them with a serviceman, it is necessary to consult with a psychologist at a military unit.

Lack of quick wit and understanding characterize questions not in essence, the expression of confusion and fear, frequent contacting comrades for clarifications, being late for construction, a delay in starting work, and primitive statements.

The described techniques for studying the personality of a soldier give a fairly complete picture of its features, which allows to individualize educational work, to ensure a rational distribution of replenishment among units and posts.

If necessary, an in-depth study of military personnel should be addressed to a psychologist of a military unit or a specialist of a center (point) of psychological assistance and rehabilitation.
