The use of the sociometric method in the study of a military team

In military practice, the sociometric technique is used in two versions: parametric and nonparametric.

The essence of parametric sociometry is that the subjects are invited to make a strictly defined number of choices according to a given criterion. For example, to name five servicemen who have the greatest compatibility and conflict-freeness or who can make up the most reliable team to perform a special task.

Nonparametric sociometry allows you to choose and reject any number of people, provided that the military is positive about the survey. Otherwise, there may be answers “I choose all” or “I reject all”, which significantly distort the results.

The advantages of sociometry are: the ability to collect significant material in a short time, which can be processed statistically and can be presented visually; the ability to register relationships between all members of the team (group). At the same time, one of its shortcomings includes the fixation of predominantly emotional relations, expressed in the likes and dislikes of military personnel; the inability to identify the true motives of the election; reflection in the number of elections is not so much cohesion as friendships.

It is believed that the methodology for assessing group cohesion is available to every officer. The essence of the sociometric technique consists in the choice by each member of the group from its composition of a partner for joint actions and communication in various alleged situations.
To this end, questions are formulated answers (elections) to which it is possible to identify the individual attitude of a soldier to other members of the team according to a certain criterion (for example, business, moral, communicative, emotional, role-playing). Questions of positive and negative orientation may sound something like this:

- Which member of the group would you like to carry out critical combat missions with? Who could lead the group to carry out the responsible task assigned by the commander? (business criterion);

- Who would ask for advice? Which military personnel would you disagree with? (moral criterion);

- With whom would you like to talk, chat in your free time from the service? (communicative);

- With whom would you like to relax together (go to dismissal, to a party, etc.)? (emotional criterion), etc.

For registration of answers, questionnaires are prepared, the form of which is shown in table No. 1, designed for 10 (2 of each criteria) questions asked. To the right of the alphabetical list of all military personnel of the unit are several columns in which respondents will make their choice.

The experience of conducting sociometric surveys in military conditions shows that the most significant criteria for the non-parametric assessment of group cohesion are the respondents' choice of those military personnel with whom he could successfully carry out various activities within his own competence.
