The problem of the subject of military psychological research

The psyche is a twisted universe. The system of military psychological phenomena that arise in conditions of military life is so diverse that an attempt to study everything will inevitably lead to the fact that nothing will be thoroughly studied. An essential characteristic of the problem of determining the subject area of military psychology is that the number of tasks important for the development of science is very large, and the number of military psychologists with the necessary training is very small. In such a situation, a significant danger is the natural "dispersal" of scientific forces, which is inevitable if the direction of the "main blow" of military psychological research is not determined. It is very important to correctly outline the circle of military-psychological phenomena that could really be studied quite deeply, thereby forming the substantial psychological face of military psychology.

In the interest of resolving this problem, M.G. Yaroshevsky regarding the backbone factor and units of analysis of scientific activity. “The consolidating beginning of the activity of scientific and social associations,” he noted, “is, according to the nature of science, certain cognitive (subject-logical) structures and factors.” As a system unit for the analysis of scientific activity M.G. Yaroshevsky proposes to highlight a research program that "... includes interacting and inseparable components - subject-logical, socio-scientific and personality-psychological."

We believe that a “difficult situation” can be proposed as a subject-logical component of VPI. Such situations are typical for the life of a soldier and a military team, and above all for combat activities, and they distinguish military from other types of activities. It is the general theory of difficult situations that could become the substantive and psychological core of military psychology, form the “face” of the latter, and be a noticeable contribution of military psychologists to the development of domestic and world psychological science.

The situation is a unit of analysis of the psyche and has certain spatio-temporal boundaries, as well as a system of meaningful characteristics. A difficult situation is such a situation significant for a person in which his subjective assessment of his abilities to achieve his goals shows their insufficiency and this causes mental tension.

We can propose the following classification of difficult situations that make up the substantive psychological core of military psychological research.

Difficult situations in military activity are most studied in military psychology compared with other types of difficult situations.
However, due to the conceptual fragmentation of the research, there is no single theory of a difficult situation in military psychology. Difficult situations arise when performing complex tasks of military activity and pose military psychology with problems related to the professional and psychological training of military personnel, decision making, stress, individual psychological characteristics of soldiers that affect the effectiveness of their activities in various difficult situations, and a number of others.

Intrapersonal difficult situations are caused by the execution of difficult orders, the combat use of weapons against a person, overcoming the overloads caused by military service, various mental injuries, overcoming them, etc.

Assistance to military personnel in resolving intrapsychic difficult situations can be provided by means of psychotherapy, psychological training, and various types of psychological assistance.

A variety of conflicts represent a typical socio-psychological phenomenon that occurs in military collectives and groups of military personnel. Their research, the search for ways to prevent and resolve them is one of the priority areas in the VPI.

Thus, the conceptual core of military-psychological research proposed above, the system-forming factor of which is a difficult situation, covers all the main problems of psychology: personality, activity, and team. Systematization of military psychological research in order to develop a general theory of difficult situations and related problems will undoubtedly contribute to increasing the effectiveness of VPI and the credibility of military psychologists in Russian psychology.

The problem of the subject of military psychological research

  1. The problem of choosing the subject of military psychological research
A typical mistake made by a military psychologist when choosing a VPI is that at first the topic of a dissertation, diploma, term paper is often determined, and on this basis the research problem is formulated. This choice of problem has far-reaching negative consequences. By definition, B.F. Lomova, the backbone factor of the activity is the motive-goal vector. If the military
  2. ACTUAL PROBLEMS OF MILITARY-PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH
The origin and development of Russian military psychology is a non-linear, uneven process, accompanied by continuous quantitative changes, qualitative leaps, the constant struggle of conservative and innovative trends, materialistic and idealistic approaches. 4. PROBLEMS OF METHODOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF MILITARY-PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH
In order to gain the ability to military-psychological knowledge, it is far from enough to have an interest in him. The "world of psychology" has been formed over millennia and therefore the process of its formation is far from accidental,

  6. The problem of conceptual schemes of a systematic description of military-psychological phenomena
The complexity of military-psychological phenomena necessarily requires the use of a systematic approach in the interests of their study. On the basis of system analysis, systems of concepts describing VPJ can be developed. The principle of a systematic approach involves: considering the phenomenon under study as a system, that is, as a delimited set of interacting elements; determination of composition
  7. Psychological characteristics of the personality of participants in local conflicts in the conditions of their return from a traumatic situation as an object and subject of psychological research
Recently, the work of both psychiatrists and psychologists (Yu.A. Aleksoandrovsky, L.N. Sobchik, L.I. Spivak and others) has been devoted to studying the effect on humans of extreme psycho-traumatic stressful situations. This is due to an increase in the number of conflicts with hostilities, natural disasters and catastrophes. Of particular practical importance is the study of situations of the person’s return from
  8. The methodology of military psychological research
The military psychologist in his practical activities uses certain methods to achieve his goal. The ways of organizing our own activities are characteristic of any specialist, but in everyday life we rarely think about how they arise, how and why they are adequate to what we want to do, whether they can be recommended to others. Evidence-based practice

  10. The main directions of military psychological research in Russia after 1917
Military psychology developed after 1918 unevenly and controversially. Along with the years of the development of military psychological research, there were periods of calm on the psychological front and even moments when the need for military psychology was called into question. After 1918, at different times, military psychological research was carried out in the following main areas: 1)
  11. Methodology and theory of military psychological research: essence and content
The objective development needs of the modern Russian Armed Forces put forward specific tasks for military psychologists, the solution of which requires high competence in a rather specialized field of knowledge. In this regard, as the studies show, many representatives of military psychological science and practice have illusory ideas about the so-called
  12. The role and tasks of the historical analysis of military psychological research
The need to possess the means of methodological analysis, some of the problems of which are reflected in the previous chapter, becomes obvious. This thesis becomes very relevant due to the fact that in the minds of some military psychologists there is a belief that they completely master the methodological foundations of military psychology, which in reality leads to stagnation of ideas and stagnation
  13. Correlation of theory, experiment and practice in the process of military psychological research
This problem reflects the implementation by military psychologists of the most important principle of psychology - the principle of the unity of theory, experiment and practice, the significance of which is shown by B.F. Lomov. This principle is briefly formulated by K.K. Platonov: "... An experiment, being substantiated by a theory, verifies and refines it and, together with it being verified by practice as the highest criterion of truth, serves it, improving it." Violation

  16. The state of military psychological research in Russia after the end of the Great Patriotic War
In the military educational institutions of the USSR, increased attention was paid to military psychology after the Second World War. This was expressed in the organizational design of military psychology, the creation of departments, laboratories, research groups.
