The problem of the subject of military psychological research

The psyche is a twisted universe. The system of military psychological phenomena that arise in conditions of military life is so diverse that an attempt to study everything will inevitably lead to the fact that nothing will be thoroughly studied. An essential characteristic of the problem of determining the subject area of ​​military psychology is that the number of tasks important for the development of science is very large, and the number of military psychologists with the necessary training is very small. In such a situation, a significant danger is the natural "dispersal" of scientific forces, which is inevitable if the direction of the "main blow" of military psychological research is not determined. It is very important to correctly outline the circle of military-psychological phenomena that could really be studied quite deeply, thereby forming the substantial psychological face of military psychology.

In the interest of resolving this problem, M.G. Yaroshevsky regarding the backbone factor and units of analysis of scientific activity. “The consolidating beginning of the activity of scientific and social associations,” he noted, “is, according to the nature of science, certain cognitive (subject-logical) structures and factors.” As a system unit for the analysis of scientific activity M.G. Yaroshevsky proposes to highlight a research program that "... includes interacting and inseparable components - subject-logical, socio-scientific and personality-psychological."

We believe that a “difficult situation” can be proposed as a subject-logical component of VPI. Such situations are typical for the life of a soldier and a military team, and above all for combat activities, and they distinguish military from other types of activities. It is the general theory of difficult situations that could become the substantive and psychological core of military psychology, form the “face” of the latter, and be a noticeable contribution of military psychologists to the development of domestic and world psychological science.

The situation is a unit of analysis of the psyche and has certain spatio-temporal boundaries, as well as a system of meaningful characteristics. A difficult situation is such a situation significant for a person in which his subjective assessment of his abilities to achieve his goals shows their insufficiency and this causes mental tension.

We can propose the following classification of difficult situations that make up the substantive psychological core of military psychological research.

Difficult situations in military activity are most studied in military psychology compared with other types of difficult situations.
However, due to the conceptual fragmentation of the research, there is no single theory of a difficult situation in military psychology. Difficult situations arise when performing complex tasks of military activity and pose military psychology with problems related to the professional and psychological training of military personnel, decision making, stress, individual psychological characteristics of soldiers that affect the effectiveness of their activities in various difficult situations, and a number of others.

Intrapersonal difficult situations are caused by the execution of difficult orders, the combat use of weapons against a person, overcoming the overloads caused by military service, various mental injuries, overcoming them, etc.

Assistance to military personnel in resolving intrapsychic difficult situations can be provided by means of psychotherapy, psychological training, and various types of psychological assistance.

A variety of conflicts represent a typical socio-psychological phenomenon that occurs in military collectives and groups of military personnel. Their research, the search for ways to prevent and resolve them is one of the priority areas in the VPI.

Thus, the conceptual core of military-psychological research proposed above, the system-forming factor of which is a difficult situation, covers all the main problems of psychology: personality, activity, and team. Systematization of military psychological research in order to develop a general theory of difficult situations and related problems will undoubtedly contribute to increasing the effectiveness of VPI and the credibility of military psychologists in Russian psychology.
