Why did this happen?

The end of any war stops any need to kill enemies. They are no longer “enemies”, but “partners” in post-war negotiations. It becomes necessary to switch from a military, military representation of reality, from dashing journalistic descriptions of bloody victories to a peace-building, as they say, civilized worldview. To begin the process of “public forgetting” the nightmares of war

(mutual war crimes), politicians and diplomats are forced to dissociate themselves from military generals, officers and extinguish, crush their fighting fervor. Some of the heroes of the war have to become a “victim” of this dissociation, and maybe also a “gift” to former enemies. Given the relative equality of power between the reconciled opponents, their sacrificial gifts should be mutual.

The fact that Budanov is such a sacrifice is evidenced even by the fact that the trial was initiated at the initiative of the leaders of the General Staff of the Russian Army, and not in the usual way, carried statements by the injured party. This “initiative” was preceded by persistent demands by the Council of Europe to begin, finally, in the “Chechen war” of the trial of “war crimes”. Simply put, in order to end the war with its cruelties, in order to change the military worldview to a peaceful one, it was time to consider “military exploits” as “war crimes”. This means - the trial of Budanov is not only a criminal process, but also a political action.

No need to ask if this is good or bad. At the end of wars, such processes are inevitable (someone will say: “Necessary!”). They are signals and moral impulses for the military so that they abandon the "heroism of murder" and come to terms with a peaceful, barracks existence.

However, absurd, extremely dangerous and harmful for the army and for the country, show trials of the heroes of the war, if it is still ongoing. The public consciousness and the consciousness of officers seem to be bifurcated:

• there is still a war and, protecting ourselves, we must kill the enemies;

• at the same time, it is impossible to defend oneself with weapons, since the “war killings” have already begun to be judged as “crimes”.

Such, relatively speaking, schizophrenic bifurcation of mass consciousness demoralizes the army, splits civil society.

The initiators of the trial of the “war hero” fall into a psychological trap. How to be Of course, the trial should have been completed by identifying the perpetrators from both warring parties, but the initiators of premature trials must also be condemned by the public opinion.

There were other reasons for post-war trials in history.
After World War II, the victorious generals could become a competitor to political power. Anticipating this, Stalin repressed many Soviet marshals, generals, and officers. However, now there is no place for events of the Stalin era

Judgments about the trial in the Budanov case revealed two views on how the war in Chechnya affects Russia.

Some say that the justification of the war and its cruelties (as well as diminishing the crime of Yuri Budanov) by the media arouses aggressiveness and xenophobia in the Russian population. They are aggravated by deterioration, in particular due to the war, the economic situation of many people. More and more soldiers, officers, policemen (!), “Infected” by aggressiveness, are returning from the war. This, allegedly, creates a “diffuse destruction” (that is, spreading and penetrating into all destruction) of the moral principles of Russian society, its economy, and administrative unity. And the court is not severe enough to the defendant, on the one hand, the result of such destruction. On the other hand, the calls: “To justify the hero of the war!”, Sounding both in the courtroom and around it, reinforce this destruction.

But there is another opinion:

• people returning from war who have felt their strength and dignity;

• in the “Chechen war” the consequences of years of destruction and discrediting of our army became visible, and therefore it became possible to restore its combat effectiveness;

• the war in Chechnya against terrorism, for the integrity of Russia, the majority of its citizens perceived with approval. Moreover, war creates a “heroization” of public consciousness;

• Colonel Budanov is perceived by many as not so much a criminal as a hero and a victim of war.

The trial of Budanov made people think about the morality of war, about triumphant rejoicing and the bitterness of war deaths, about the fact that combat valor can be “heroic” and “villainous” from different angles. It must be assumed that such an awareness of the war by the masses of people should contribute to its end. But it will not prevent future wars.
