Why did this happen?

The end of any war stops any need to kill enemies. They are no longer “enemies”, but “partners” in post-war negotiations. It becomes necessary to move from a militant, military conception of reality, from dashing journalistic descriptions of bloody victories to a peacemaking, as they say, civilized worldview. To begin the process of “publicly forgetting” the nightmares of war

(mutual war crimes), politicians and diplomats are forced to dissociate themselves from the military generals, officers, and to suppress, pin down their military fervor. Some of the war heroes have to become a “victim” of this dissociation, and maybe a “gift” to former enemies. With relative equality of forces reconciled opponents of their sacrificial gifts should be mutual.

The fact that Budanov is such a victim is evidenced at least by the fact that his trial was initiated by the leaders of the General Staff of the Russian Army, and not in the usual way, the statements of the injured party bore. This “initiative” was preceded by the insistent demands of the Council of Europe to start on the "Chechen war" proceedings of "war crimes". Simply put, in order to stop the war with its cruelties, in order to change the military world view to a peaceful one, it was time to consider “combat exploits” as “war crimes”. This means that the trial of Budanov is not only a criminal process, but also a political action.

No need to ask - is it good or bad. At the end of wars, such processes are inevitable (someone will say: "Necessary!"). They are signals and moral impulses for the military, so that they abandon the “heroism of the murders” and put up with a peaceful, barracks-based existence.

However, they are absurd, extremely dangerous and harmful for the army and for the country - show trials of war heroes, if it continues. The public consciousness and the consciousness of the officers split apart:

• there is still a war and, defending himself, he must kill his enemies;

• At the same time, it is impossible to defend oneself with weapons, since “combat killings” have already begun to be judged as “crimes”.

Such, relatively speaking, schizophrenic duality of the mass consciousness demoralizes the army, splits civil society.

The initiators of the trial of the “war hero” fall into a psychological trap. How to be? Of course, it was necessary to complete the trial by identifying the perpetrators on both sides of the war, but we still need to condemn the public opinion of the initiators of premature trials.

There have been other reasons for post-war lawsuits.
After the Great Patriotic War, the victorious generals could become a competitor of political power. Anticipating this, Stalin repressed many Soviet marshals, generals, officers. However, now there is no place for the events of Stalin's time

In judgments about the trial of the Budanov case, two views emerged on how the war in Chechnya affects Russia.

________________________________________

Some say that the justification of the war and its cruelty (as well as the diminution of the crime of Yuri Budanov) by the media arouses aggression and xenophobia in the Russian population. They are aggravated by the deterioration, in particular due to the war, of the economic situation of many people. From the war more and more soldiers, officers, policemen (!), "Infected" with aggression return. This, allegedly, creates a “diffuse destruction” (that is, pervasive and penetrating into all destruction) moral foundations of Russian society, its economy, administrative unity. And the court is not severe enough to the defendant, on the one hand, the result of such destruction. On the other hand, appeals: “To justify a war hero!”, Sounding both in the courtroom and around it, reinforce this destruction.

But there is another opinion:

• people who feel their strength and dignity return from the war;

• on the “Chechen war” the consequences of years of destruction and discrediting of our army became visible, and therefore it became possible to restore its combat capability;

• The war in Chechnya against terrorism, for the integrity of Russia, is perceived by the majority of its citizens with approval. Moreover, war creates a “glorification” of public consciousness;

• Colonel Budanov is perceived by many not as a criminal but as a hero and a victim of war.

The trial of Budanov made people think about the morality of the war, over the triumph of triumph and the bitterness of military deaths, over the fact that martial prowess can be viewed from different sides both “heroic” and “villainous”. It must be assumed that such an awareness of war by the masses of people should contribute to ending it. But it will not prevent future wars.
