Why do we lose weight?

On the hidden and obvious motives for losing weight

Usually, a person accepts something only when he realizes or feels that he needs it for some reason. This “why?” In psychology is called motive. Speaking about the practice of losing weight, we could formulate our question as follows: why does a person want to lose weight, what is his motive? And the second question, how should you want to lose weight, so that this desire would come true for sure?
These questions are not random. They occupy a leading place in the work of psychologists specializing in the correction of overweight. It is assumed that if a person knew exactly why he should lose weight, his desire increased many times over, and he would have courageously overcome the hardships and hardships, would have got rid of excess weight. That is, the reason for all failures in a weak, inadequate desire. This desire must somehow be strengthened.
By the way, we do not agree with the statement that many fat people do not want to lose weight at all. The desire to lose weight is every owner of extra pounds. Ask your plump girlfriend such a question - she would like to lose weight if this desire could be fulfilled without any effort. For example, to fall asleep plump, wake up thin. I think no one doubts her answer!
And if a person can not formulate a motive for losing weight, does not mean at all, he does not have this motive. Do not underestimate the so-called instinctive, intuitive motives. Like any animal, man lives, subordinating his activities to three basic instincts - safety, satiety, possibility of reproduction. If, after losing weight, a person becomes physically stronger, more successful and self-confident, then his sense of security increases. If, losing weight, he becomes more attractive in appearance, then he will increase the possibility of implementing the breeding instinct.
Our instincts are powerful engines that ultimately determine the majority of our motives. And do not be shy of our instinctive desires. If losing weight makes you more attractive, sexier, more successful, what's wrong with that?
Now about the motives, about these extremely important for us "why?":
All motives for losing weight can be divided into abstract, concrete and semi-concrete.
Specific, the best. This is when I know exactly why I need to lose weight, and I know exactly by when. For example, someone needs to lose weight for the wedding, someone to return from her husband's business trip, a ballerina because of a couple of extra pounds may lose her job, the actress is looking for a new role and she has the task to immediately lose a few pounds of athletes (boxers, wrestlers) there is a need to move to a lighter weight category, and so on. It is clear that the effectiveness of specific motives is very high.
And what should we, ordinary people, do if we are not married, we are not athletes and not actors, and we do not need a new role or a new stage image? Yes the same! Weight loss gives us a lot of advantages, even if you look, much more than losing weight for the sake of the profession. After all, we get at our disposal youth, health, a real increase in life expectancy, an increase in the quality of life, increased attractiveness and sexuality, success, self-reliance, experience in successfully solving life problems, and much, much more!
And when we should start the path to our bright future. Yes, right now! What to pull? Life is one, the other will not be!
The best thing is to set yourself a task for the next two or three months. Optimally, if your birthday is coming soon! All the advantages of a thinner and built person, the best gift you can give to your beloved one! And if the birthday has recently passed, and the next is not soon? Yes, you never know holidays worthy of a gift? New year, the Eighth of March, the grand opening of the beach season, the birthday of a loved one. And these holidays alternate. And they are enough for any number of extra pounds.
Another tip - set intermediate goals. For example, after a month, weigh less by 4, lose weight by a kilogram per week, and so on.
Be careful! If something can destroy a specific motive, then only an unrealistic task. For example, I certainly want to lose ten kilograms in a month. It's impossible. Most likely, I will ask myself too harsh conditions and either break down or harm my health. Conclusion - do not set yourself unrealistic tasks.
So-called semi-specific motifs are less effective. This is when it is clear why, but it is not clear by what time. For example, I need to lose weight in order to improve my shaky health. But since no one obliges me to lose weight right tomorrow, I still can not get together, all the time I postpone the beginning.
Advice - try to translate such a motive into a specific one. Enter in your reasoning date. For example, I want to lose five kilograms in two months. This will significantly improve my condition.
It will be easier to move and easier to breathe. If I start tomorrow, in two months I will be able to see myself built and rejuvenated. Five kilograms in two months is 600 grams - 1 kg per week. The real challenge is to weigh six hundred grams less at the end of each week.
It is not funny, but sometimes betting on someone helps to concretize the motive for losing weight. However, when you get involved, it is better to look for a more reliable motive. Otherwise, by proving to whom it is necessary that you are “oh-go-go!”, You risk recovering back.
The least effect on abstract motifs is “oh well! ...”. Such motives are in the long run of the same abstract wishes accompanying us in life “oh, it would be good to learn Spanish, defend a dissertation, buy or change an apartment for a big one, go away with your mother-in-law, hang out with your mother, get married, get a divorce, and so Further".
Tip one, look for a specific motive! Abstract do not work! In the extreme case, if you start losing weight does not work, then put a simpler task - do not gain weight. It's pretty simple, if you eat low-fat and move a little more.
Slimming motives have one unpleasant trick - I really want to lose weight when I'm full. And sometimes, the more I am fed, the stronger I want to lose weight. But when I'm hungry, this desire decreases. And it's much harder for me to follow. Many of our patients complained that when they were hungry, they completely forgot about all the advantages that they would lose weight - slender, dexterous, beautiful, this is all in their dreams. This, if there will be, is not even tomorrow. And hunger, here he is. He is here and now!
Here tips can be both psychological and nutritional.
An example of psychological decisions. You gently remind yourself of your goal. For example, somewhere in a prominent place you have a picture where you are slim and graceful, and you really like yourself. Or the opposite option - the photo shows a fat man, as you might have been, but in no case would you like to be again. One of our thinner patients told me that he hung such a photo of himself in the fridge. There is an anecdote that one American film star kept in the kitchen a portrait of another movie star, her longtime rival, plumped up to disgrace ...
However, we prefer those images that attract, than those that scare.
It will be great to help the cause if you find a magic phrase that will magically tune you to overcome difficulties and continue efforts.
One of our patients decided to lose weight by the New Year holidays. It was assumed that the appearance of a young woman with a beautiful figure would be for her the best New Year's gift. And whenever, she was drawn to excesses, her inner voice said: “Olya, do not spoil your holiday!”. The desire to eat too much, immediately weakened.
Another of our patients suddenly very clearly imagined himself thinner and rejuvenated. It is rejuvenated. For him, losing weight was a journey, or rather, even a return to his youth. Friends from the past, as if calling him: “Come back, Seryozh!”
We have already said that the joy of small intermediate victories will help very much to the cause. If you managed to perform a weekly program, say, lose weight by a kilogram, this will delight you all next week. The emotion of joy is a positive emotion. It is necessarily accompanied by an increase in mood. And once the mood is good, it means that muscle tone is elevated, and you don’t want to eat.
Another positive emotion is the emotion of interest. Isn't it very interesting to see how your appearance changes for the better week after week, it is very interesting to feel a slight pleasant hunger, which means that old fat deposits are burning in your body. It is interesting how taste and food habits change, it is interesting that light food, it turns out, can fully saturate us, even in small quantities. It is interesting to track how your outlook on life is changing, and how attitudes of others around you are changing. Hence the rule -
be interested in everything that happens to you, be interested in details. It is interest that makes our life filled and happy.
Dietary solution - try to build a diet so that it is transferred as comfortable as possible. If hunger can kill a motive, why risk and assign yourself a hungry regime?
Remember, the motive will give birth to the desire to lose weight, and my brain tells me the way in which it should be done. If the brain is mistaken and prompts me too hard, literally intolerable mode, then it is clear that there will not be enough motive to fulfill this mode.
The conclusion is obvious -
we should not only try to increase the desire to lose weight, but also attend to studying our body and finding physiological ways to reduce the mass of stored fat. Ways that are painless and pleasant in themselves!
