FOREWORD

The discipline "Epizootology and Infectious Diseases" is one of the most important in the preparation of a veterinarian. The last textbook on epizootology edited by Professor A. A. Konopatkin was published 14 years ago, in 1993. At present, it has become practically inaccessible, and the material presented in it is significantly outdated. Epizootologists and infectious disease specialists of veterinary universities and faculties of our country for several years talked about the need to write a new textbook for university students on this subject.

The textbook “General Epizootology” was published by KolosS Publishing House in 2004. This textbook “Infectious Animal Diseases”, which is actually a continuation of it, was written by a team of specialists, leading professors of research institutes and teachers of the departments of epizootology and infectious diseases of several universities in Russia (MGAVMiB, St. Petersburg GAVM, Kazan GAVM, Voronezh GAU, Omsk GAU, VIEV) in accordance with the State educational standard (GOS) of higher professional education, approved by the Ministry of Education of Russia us "Epizootology and infectious disease" and taking into account the latest data on infectious diseases of animals.

About 150 nosological units are included in this textbook. The material for all diseases is presented according to a single, generally accepted scheme. A separate article is devoted to each disease. The book consistently sets out information about bacterial, viral, fungal and other diseases. For individual chapters at the beginning of a group of related diseases (for example, clostridiosis, chlamydia, mycoplasmosis, rickettsiosis, mycosis, etc.), a small characteristic is given for a deeper understanding of their common causes.

The name of the disease is given in Russian, Latin and English, the main Russian-language synonyms are given. The definition of a disease with its main characteristic is highlighted with a key phrase at the beginning of each article. For each disease, the current taxonomic name of the pathogen is given, a description of its types and variants indicating the main properties that are important for understanding the infectious process, as well as data on resistance to the main physicochemical factors, which is important for understanding the preservation of the pathogen in the external environment and actions of disinfectants.

Information on the spread of the disease on the globe, the presence (breadth of distribution) or absence on the territory of Russia, the epizootological and economic danger of the disease, as well as the pathogenesis are considered. This material has an auxiliary value.

The “Epizootology” sets out the most important epizootological data on the disease: species and age susceptibility, sources and reservoirs of the pathogen, infection method and transmission mechanism, intensity of the manifestation of the epizootic process, seasonality and frequency, significance of predisposing factors, incidence and mortality (mortality).

The ideas about the incubation period, the nature of the course and the clinical forms of the manifestation of the disease are reflected in the "Course and clinical manifestation".
The characteristic of the most affected systems of the body, the characteristic clinical signs in various animal species (if the disease is common for animals of different species), the outcome of the disease is also described.

In the “Pathological signs” the most characteristic (pathognomonic) macro-changes of organs and tissues are outlined with a brief indication of the general changes. Of the histopathological changes, the greatest importance is attached to those that have diagnostic value.

“Diagnosis and differential diagnosis” is devoted to the main diagnostic methods, on the basis of which a preliminary and final diagnosis is established. It is indicated which pathological material should be sent to the laboratory for research. A reference is made to the current regulatory documents in accordance with which laboratory diagnostics are carried out, and mandatory indicators for which the diagnosis is considered established. In terms of differential diagnosis, the names of the main diseases (infectious and non-infectious) are listed that are similar to the described.

Further, for each disease in the “Immunity, specific prophylaxis” the possibilities, timing of formation, duration and intensity of post-infection and post-vaccination immunity are noted. Brief information is given on the biological products used and their effectiveness without specifying the dosages, vaccination rates, vaccination times and vaccine and serum administration points, given that this information is described in the instructions (instructions) for the use of biological products that are necessarily attached to each package.

The “Prevention” outlines a scheme for organizing and conducting general and specific preventive measures for a given disease in accordance with modern requirements and current rules (instructions).

The “Treatment” reflects the most important specific therapeutic measures and the drugs used for this without specifying doses, regimens and methods, since this information is very extensive and constantly updated. The reader can find information on the forms of preparations, dosages and methods of use from numerous reference books and manuals on pharmacology and chemotherapy.

The “Control measures” describe the measures for eliminating the disease in accordance with the current rules (instructions) of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation. The nature of restrictive measures, their duration, manipulations with sick animals (the possibility and expediency of treatment, slaughter, destruction), the possibility of using raw materials, products, feed and waste are indicated; rules for the disposal of corpses, animal waste and manure, veterinary and sanitary measures. For diseases common to animals and humans, a summary of measures to protect human health is provided at the end of each article.

Authors - compilers of the textbook will gratefully accept feedback, criticisms and suggestions that will be taken into account in future work.
