ETHICAL NORMS for the professional activities of military psychologists of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation

(Guidelines for psychological work in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Appendix 1)



The military psychologist is called upon with all his professional activity to contribute to the creation of favorable conditions for the comprehensive development of the personality of military personnel, members of their families and civilian personnel, the preservation, strengthening and restoration of their mental health, the formation of highly moral relations between them in order to strengthen the combat readiness and combat readiness of units and subunits.

The professional activity of a military psychologist is associated with the knowledge of purely individual personal characteristics of people, their deep inner experiences and conditions. The psychologist makes a targeted intervention in their thoughts, feelings, worldview, behavior. In the process, a military psychologist uses information whose careless use can cause irreparable harm to individual military personnel, families, military collectives, and the authority of military psychology.

At the same time, the psychologist must develop suggestions and recommendations to the commanders (chiefs), provide them with the necessary data on military personnel in the interests of educational work.

This requires the psychologist to be guided by the commandment "Do no harm!", To conduct psychological work in accordance with the ethical standards of professional activity:

- Respect the personal inviolability of servicemen, their right to self-determination, to participate or not to participate in research, diagnostic and formative-corrective measures, to psychological counseling without the presence of third parties;

- explain the goals and objectives of psychological research, the procedure for using the information received;

- not to take part in events accompanied by physical or psychological coercion of military personnel to communicate any information, change of views and beliefs, even if they are authorized by his superior;

- be able to maintain people's trust, to correctly navigate in situations of conflict between the norms of subordination and morality, the needs and interests of individual military personnel and various groups;

- evaluate any professional situation from an ethical point of view and inform the commanders (chiefs), other persons about the ethical requirements for it and their own ethical position;

- distribute information about the client only with his personal consent, in the amount indicated by him and to a certain circle of persons;

- be responsible for the consequences of their professional activities;

- clearly represent the limits of their capabilities in solving current problems, apply only proven and mastered working methods;

- predict the consequences of their actions, minimize the risk of unintentional negative effects on people;

- constantly improve knowledge, skills and abilities, maintain their qualifications at the level of professional activity requirements;

- use diagnostic, corrective, psychoprophylactic methods and techniques that are clearly understood, considered sufficiently mastered and anticipates the consequences of their use;

- not to disseminate information and special knowledge that can be used to manipulate people, worsen relations between them;

- take measures to maintain the confidentiality of professional relations, received information, documents, personal records, photographs, audio and video films related to work.



A professional secret can be revealed by a psychologist on his own initiative only if the non-dissemination of this information can cause significant harm to the client and other people.



A military psychologist is obliged to build his relations with colleagues on the basis of mutual respect, trust, mutual assistance, to share with them the information received, methodological and scientific findings that allow effective practical work.



The military psychologist in the interests of the client should actively cooperate with doctors, lawyers, officials of educational institutions.



Violation by the psychologist of ethical norms and principles of work is incompatible with the performance of duties by him in his post.
