Evaluation of the results of activities and human behavior, the team - a powerful method of military psychological research

Assessing the role of the method in the success of studying any problem, the outstanding Russian researcher-experimenter I.P. Pavlov wrote: “The method is the very first basic thing. The severity of the study depends on the method, on the mode of action. With a good method and a not very talented person can do a lot. And with a bad method, a brilliant person will work in vain, will not receive valuable, accurate knowledge. ”

Military-psychological phenomena cannot be studied directly, since they are not material, but ideal. We can learn their laws by studying either the objective and, therefore, fixed prerequisites for their occurrence, or those changes in the material world that are the result of VPJ. The most significant of them are the results of the activities and behavior of a military serviceman or military team. A lot of important information about VPJ can be obtained by studying the process of activity and behavior of a warrior. Therefore, the assessment of the process and the results of the activities and behavior of the military personnel or military personnel is a powerful method of VPI.

K. Marx rightly noted in his time: “What is the life activity of individuals, such are they themselves. What they are, therefore, coincides with their production - coincides with both what they produce and the way they produce. ” By analyzing the results of activity, as well as the process of achieving these results, methods of activity, we can get fairly reliable information about many phenomena of the psyche of a warrior and the psychology of a military team. A person is judged not by what he says or thinks of himself, but by his deeds.

Despite the obvious importance of this method, in practice it has not yet been developed. There are several reasons for this state of affairs. Firstly, they include the dependence of the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the results of activities not only on many subjective, but also on a large number of objective factors. Because of this, it is difficult to determine which factors had a decisive influence on the achievement of specific results of activity. Secondly, the relationship between certain characteristics of the results of activities with specific features of the psyche of soldiers and the psychology of a military team has not been sufficiently studied. Therefore, even if the dependence of the results of activity on subjective factors is established, it is not always possible to say unequivocally which particular psychic phenomena caused these results, what are their features. Thirdly, the analysis of the results of activity is usually applied in conjunction with other methods of psychology or is even done through the use of other methods, for example, analysis of documents, observation. In this case, the appearance of the subordination of this method, its non-independence is created.

What is the general characteristic of this method? Analysis of the results of activities is the VPI method, the content of which consists in assessing the final and intermediate results of the activity, as well as the ways of its implementation in the interests of identifying the psychological characteristics of the soldiers and military collectives that performed this activity.

Analysis of the results of activities can be supplemented by an analysis of the behavior of soldiers, that is, an assessment of their actions. In its most general form, the method includes an analysis of the results and the process of activity and behavior of soldiers, military collectives.

The results of activities can be final and intermediate, primary and secondary, evaluated directly and indirectly. An indirect analysis of the results of activities is carried out according to documents and through a survey.

Before analyzing the results and the process of activity, it is necessary to establish a system of indicators characterizing it. Their definition allows you to more objectively assess the quality of the work performed, differentially establish the relationship of the results with the characteristics of the psyche.

Activities are most often evaluated according to a system of indicators related to labor products. Such an assessment seems incomplete, since a person, like a collective, is characterized not only by what he produces, but also by the way he produces. Therefore, the idea of the quality of activity will be more complete if it takes into account not only the characteristics of the products of the activity, but also the costs of their production, as well as the features of the process of activity.

The products of the activity, that is, what is produced, and the cost of manufacturing this product are the results of the activity. A generalizing characteristic of the results of activities is its effectiveness. Under the effectiveness refers to the ratio of productivity to the sum of material, time, psychophysiological and other costs required for the production of this product. Productivity has a system of quantitative and qualitative characteristics. The number of characteristics, the optimal value of each of them is determined by the specifics of the product.

The process and methods of performing activities also have a system of indicators that allow in the most general way to assess the quality of activities.

Productivity is one of the two main components of performance (see. Fig. 4.6.1). Labor productivity also cannot be equated with the effectiveness of activities that are attributed only to time costs. The concept of “quality of activity” represents the most general characteristic of activity and includes the considered indicators.

The effectiveness of the application of the method of analysis of performance depends on the fulfillment of a number of requirements.

First, the psychologist must clearly understand what kind of results he is studying: final or intermediate, primary or secondary, typical for a given warrior, or random.

Secondly, it is important to determine which characteristics of the results of activities are provided due to the action of subjective factors, and which due to objective.

Thirdly, the reliability of the information received will be higher if the analysis of the results of activities is carried out repeatedly or for various types of activities.

Fourth, the value and reliability of the received data will be the greater, the better the manager himself knows the activity whose results he analyzes.

Fifth, it is preferable to use this method not in isolation, but in combination with other methods of psychology.

Like any method of psychology, the analysis of performance has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of the method are that the information obtained with its help, as a rule, is more objective; the method allows in general and in detail to judge the most important aspects of the personality of a warrior; performance results usually have a number of defined quantitative and qualitative characteristics, which makes it possible to compare them; the results of activities are tangible, they can be accessed repeatedly, their informational content usually usually varies slightly over time.

However, analyzing the results of activities, it is difficult to determine the nature of the impact on them of subjective factors, to establish which particular features of mental manifestations influenced the achievement of these results. The effectiveness of the application of the method largely depends on the preparedness and experience of the psychologist. Among the many results of activity, due to the masking effect of various forms of imitation, it is difficult to identify and evaluate the final and main results of the activity. The scope of the method is limited in comparison with other methods due to the fact that today it is practically not developed.

Thus, the analysis of the results and the process of activity and behavior of soldiers and military collectives is potentially an extremely powerful method of psychology. It allows you to fairly deeply and objectively assess the characteristics of the psyche of a warrior, especially his orientation, mental formations, mental cognitive processes, psychological stability. By analyzing the results of collective activity, we can assess the style of team leadership, its coherence, the nature of interpersonal relationships and other socio-psychological phenomena.

The development of this method is currently one of the most important problems, the solution of which will help to increase the effectiveness of the VPI. It is in the results of a person’s activity and behavior that his unconscious and subconscious are manifested, which are difficult to investigate with the help of tests, examination of documents, surveys, etc.
